Puppy Planning

PUPPY IS READY

I found the information provided by Dr Ian Dunbar to be very helpful in training us (!) before bringing our new pup home. Understanding that many of the challenging aspects of puppyhood can be managed quite easily or avoided altogether was invaluable. I urge you to read "Before You Get Your Puppy" well before your collection date so that you can prepare yourself and your home to minimise frustration.

Puppies are ready for collection 8-10 weeks after they are born. During these first weeks, the puppies will be weaned from Mum's milk onto dry puppy biscuits. They will be micro-chipped, wormed and vaccinated.

Most importantly, they will be socialised by their own pack and also by our family. They will be familiar with household noises and routines as we keep our puppies inside our home.

PUPPY GOES HOME

Once you have your puppy home the fun can begin!

You will find your own rhythm in raising your puppy. One that suits you and your household.

Here are a few things we have discovered along the way:

* early toilet training is critical. Set a routine (as outlined in Dr Ian Dunbar's book) and really stick to it to save yourself unnecessary hassle
*we gate our puppies and do not let them have free run of the house. They earn this privilege once toilet trained
*we only feed our dogs dry biscuits. They love to eat - everything! People food does not love them back and an overweight dog is at risk of health issues

Miniature Schnauzers are bright and alert little dogs. Easily trainable, they adore companionship and will be ready to return as much love as they are given.
